Artist's Description
Then in the Rockport of the 1960's there was a derision of those who painted the Motif #1 because it was too commercial and not creative. There were many pop up galleries of that era who sold a more psychedelic version of the Motif with glowing sunrises and contrasting darks and reds. I often think of these exhibits of the Motif which almost had a Warhol Campbell's soup can look to them. When I compare those to the 1930's Thieme and Hibbard portraits of the Red House, you have to smile. All the interpretations are of the Motif and the theme of the Motif lives in them all, yet, in spite of the huge differences in style, the essential signature of the " Motif" exists in them all as a conglomeration of all the elemental power of the location.
I have to say that as time goes by and the longer I live, I like the essential nature of the Motif more and more. It's a constant. I never thought I would ever paint of picture of Motif #1 but yet, it has happened. I tried to draw from the o...
